Preparing for War
I posted a few days ago in my Memorial Day reflection that the New Americans have never been conscripted to fight into one of the empire's many wars. The last active conscription was at the height of the Vietnam War and it didn't go over very well.
Military draft registration is back and better than ever!
When I was 18, I had to register for the draft even though the Cold War had just ended. It was a perfunctory trip to the post office in my little town to fill out a card. My small home town was a vastly different world to the discordant, noxious urban environments that are the backbone of America now. The town I grew up in had fourteen factories and all of these were shuttered and the jobs shipped overseas starting in the late 80s. NAFTA finished them off rather quickly. The only manufacturing left involved cooking meth in trailers.
Several months, I wrote one of my senators and asked in closing what his big plan was for the collapse of the Ukrainian army and the forced surrender of the country to Russia? What was he going to tell his constituents about all the money pissed away to get hundreds of thousands of men killed so that NATO could park nukes within a 7 minute distance to Moscow? America is not good at war at all but that's never stopped the country from bankrupting itself in its pursuit, either directly or as backers of proxies.
My question was more rhetorical. I already knew that the plan was to involve Americans directly in the conflict. The young in America have no economic future, no possibility for creating families and communities like the one I experienced as a youth. The excess population of underemployed, unemployed, NEETs, etc. will be shipped off into the meat grinder. The conscription registration requires women to enroll as well.
Recall that when Mike Johnson of Louisiana was selected as the Speaker of the House, the blue wing of the Uniparty claimed he was a Christofascist homophobe, etc. because of his conservative evangelical ideology.
Only weeks later, blue team went all in and rejected a proposal to have him removed as speaker. Now, under his leadership, we've seen him promote legislation in his capacity as speaker that only escalates the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The fake posturing over his ideology has dissolved into the Uniparty's war agenda. Like all things in democracy, the party disputes are all staged and both teams carve up what's left of the country for the benefit of the wealthy.
